It is an album that, despite going a little too soft at times, flows relatively smoothly, with enough variation to keep things interesting, and plenty of hooks to latch onto when the going gets a little rough.

3rd album by Amorphis. A logo change indicates for many bands also a musical change. What all started with death metal becomes more melodic, experimental, slightly progressive and psychedelic-like now. Even though Amorphis abandoned parts of the old aggressiveness and gloomy, depressive atmosphere they still stick to great melodies and guitar riffs.

Music on this album is doomy death metal, with a lot of folkish influences on guitar and keyboard melodies and there is a little bit progressive elements showing on song structures. There are smooth and atmospheric growls that have improved since the first album and from time to time clean male vocals. The lyrics are mostly adapted from a traditional Finnish national poem.

Debut album by Amorphis, featuring very good melodic death basically, full of growly vocals, good riffs and solid rhythm section. Sounds a bit ahead of its time, especially with production. The main feature here is the guitar, which churns out a multitude of chunky, melodic and hypnotic riffage that definitely leans toward death metal of a rather epic, doom, mystical variety.
