Hyste'riah G.B.C. - Snakeworld

Genre: Thrash
Country: Sweden
Year: 1991

1. Confess A Lie
2. Land Of Democracy
3. Cafe Of Hope (Slowly...)
4. Is The Coffee Ready Yet
5. Snakes
6. How Does It Feel
7. Rope For Rape

Debut album by Hyste'riah G.B.C. Great guitarwork surrounded by a tight rhythm section and a hardcorish vocalist. The group delivers a good slice of varied classic thrash metal in the process, with a reasonable production job to hold it together.

Cirith Ungol - Paradise Lost

Genre: Heavy
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Join the Legion
2. The Troll
3. Fire (Arthur Brown cover)
4. Heaven Help Us
5. Before the Lash
6. Go It Alone
7. Chaos Rising
8. Fallen Idols
9. Paradise Lost

4th album by Cirith Ungol. The problems they had with their label forced them not to even have the artistic control over the production in this album. This is not the trademark doomridden traditional metal they delivered on their first three albums, but there are a lot of beautiful moments allover, that can keep this release next to the earlier releases.

Dark Angel - Time Does Not Heal

Genre: Techn.Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Time Does Not Heal
2. Pain's Invention, Madness
3. Act Of Contrition
4. The New Priesthood
5. Psychosexuality
6. An Ancient Inherited Shame
7. Trauma And Catharsis
8. Sensory Deprovation
9. A Subtle Induction

4th album by Dark Angel. It is their most mature album, demonstrating amazing musicianship from all the members. It is slower than earlier releases, but without being slow at all! Ron Rinehart, this time is singing and not trying to catch up the speed of the rest. Gene Hoglan wrote all the lyrics, while their ad '9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!' means this is a very 'difficult' thrash album!

Cerebral Fix - Bastards

Genre: Thrash/Crossover
Country: England
Year: 1991

1. Bastards
2. Descent Into The Unconciousness
3. Veil Of Tears
4. Beyond Jerusalem
5. Return To Infinity
6. Sphereborn
7. I Lost A Friend
8. Ritual Abuse
9. Mammonite
10. Middle Third (Mono-Culture)
11. Maimed To Beg
12. No Survivors (GBH cover)
13. Smash It Up (The Damned cover)

3rd album by Cerebral Fix. The main difference with the earlier releases, is that his album is flirting a lot with death metal. While crossover/thrash is the base of their music, there are a lot of moments (especially mid-tempo parts) that are definitely proto-death metal. In the The Damned cover song lead vocals by Blaze Bayley!

Sepultura - Arise

Genre: Thrash

Year: 1991

1. Arise
2. Dead Embryonic Cells
3. Desperate Cry
4. Murder
5. Subtraction
6. Altered State
7. Under Siege (Regnum Irae)
8. Meaningless Movements
9. Infected Voice

4th album by Sepultura.  While the music may be less straightforward and more technical than before, the riffs are generally more memorable and the album as a whole feels very complete and focused. A classic album and the peak of Sepultura's discography.

Invocator - Excursion Demise

Genre: Thrash
Country: Denmark
Year: 1991

1. Excursion Demise
2. (...To A Twisted Recess Of Mind)
3. Forsaken Ones
4. The Persistence From Memorial Chasm
5. Absurd Temptation
6. Schismatic Injective Therapy
7. Occurrence Concealed
8. Beyond Insufferable Dormancy
9. Inner Contrarieties

Debut album by Invocator. A pretty underestimated album of non-stop, extreme, fast and aggressive thrashwith harsh vocals and with some elements that brings them near to death metal. It's pretty much pure energy from beginning to end.

Gamma Ray - Sigh No More

Genre: Heavy/Power
Country: Germany
Year: 1991

1. Changes
2. Rich & Famous
3. As Time Goes By
4. (We Won't) Stop The War
5. Father And Son
6. One With The World
7. Start Running
8. Countdown
9. Dream Healer
10. The Spirit

2nd album by Gamma Ray. It seems as though the group was trying to carve their own niche and escape Helloween comparisons at this point. Lyrically they left the fantasy section and became more real life issues. Musically, you can find nice riffing, nice vocal delivery, but a weak production.

Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick

Genre: Death
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Intro
2. Fall From Grace
3. Brainstorm
4. Rebel Lands
5. Doomsday Celebration
6. Day Of Suffering

8. Thy Kingdom Come
9. Unholy Blasphemies
10. Abominations
11. Desolate Ways
12. The Ancient Ones
13. In Remembrance

2nd album by Morbid Angel. It is the transitional record between Altars' speed and aggression and Covenant's heavier and sludgier darkness. The artwork is taken from the 1894 painting 'The Treasures of Satan' by Belgian symbolist painter, writer and occultist Jean Delville and was also used in Hexenhaus's first album 'A Tribute to Insanity' (1988). A classic death metal album!

12. Civilization Comes, Civilization Goes
13. Page By Page
14. Sterility
15. Body Politic Equation
16. Anticapital 17. Epilogue

Debut album by Assuck. The group is perfectly mixing grindcore with death metal, influenced by Napalm Death and Terrorizer. The fury is unbelievable and always well balanced. Politicaly charged lyrics, about anarchy and anti-capitalism, well played music, 15 minutes of pure and pioneering grindcore/death.

Acid Drinkers - Dirty Money, Dirty Tricks

Genre: Crossover/Thrash
Country: Poland
Year: 1991

1. Are You a Rebel?

3. Acid Drinker
4. Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple cover)
5. Yahoo
6. Max - He Was Here Again
7. Ziomas

12. W.G.F.S. Power
13. Don't Touch Me
14. Zorba
15. Flooded With Wine

2nd album by Acid Drinkers. It is for sure less chaotic compared to their debut. A humorous blend of thrash, punk and hard rock that makes this release exciting and surprising. Both the title and the cover art represent the band's lack of financial satisfaction from their label.

Helloween - Pink Bubbles Go Ape

Genre: Power/Heavy
Country: Germany
Year: 1991

1. Pink Bubbles Go Ape
2. Kids Of The Century
3. Back On The Streets
4. Number One
5. Heavy Metal Hamsters
6. Goin' Home
7. Someone's Crying
8. Mankind
9. I'm Doin' Fine, Crazy Man
10. The Chance
11. Your Turn

4th album by Helloween. Kai hansen left the band, pumpkins replaced by bubbles and no more drawings for cover art. Major changes that had as result the poor performance of the band generally. Kiske is doing his best to save the situation, but this is not enough. Some songs are really good, but generally the album suffers in songwritting.

Rigor Mortis - Rigor Mortis Vs. The Earth

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Dying In My Sleep
2. Mummified
3. Throwback
4. Contagious Contamination
5. The Rack
6. Psychotherapy (Ramones cover)
7. City In Fear
8. Asphyxia
9. Dead Fish
10. SOG
11. Speedwhore
12. Afterbirth Of A Midget (S.Y.G.D.P.)

2nd album by Rigor Mortis, this time with Doyle Bright replacing Bruce Corbitt behind the mic (while handling guitars too). It sees the band's punk influences bubbling to the surface, leading to a much looser, more fun feel. Mike Scaccia's guitar work is flawless as he alternates between speed-picked rhythm and tap solos.

Carcass - Necroticism-Descanting The Insalubrious

Genre: Death
Country: England
Year: 1991

1. Inpropagation
2. Corporal Jigsore Quandary
3. Symposium Of Sickness
4. Pedigree Butchery
5. Incarnated Solvent Abuse
6. Carneous Cacoffiny
7. Lavaging Expectorate Of Lysergide Composition
8. Forensic Clinicism / The Sanguine Article

3rd album by Carcass. It's the album where the band had gone from gore grind to melodic death metal before both genres even existed! Since this is the first album to feature Michael Amott, it can easily be heard that he has joined since his solos and riffing are more melodic. The album also feature the longest songs the band ever released, going all the way up to 7 minutes.

3. Something Real
4. Dream Again
5. Explained Away
6. Still Black
7. What You Became
8. Our Reunion
9. Idle Hours
10. Far Too Long

3rd album by Anacrusis, an underestimated record by an underestimated band. They managed to retain their raging thrash edge from their earlier approach, but thrown in major amounts of technicality and progressiveness. the band maintains a pretty consistent level of quality throughout the entire record.

Metal Church - The Human Factor

Genre: Heavy/Speed
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. The Human Factor
2. Date With Poverty
3. The Final Word
4. In Mourning
5. In Harm's Way
6. In Due Time
7. Agent Green
8. Flee From Reality
9. Betrayed
10. The Fight Song

4th album by Metal Church. Again, Kurdt Vanderhoof helped pen most of the songs even though he was not an active member of the band. The guitars sounds heavier and more crunchy than the previous album and the riffing attack never lets up.  Cool grooves, memorable choruses and no issue excluded.

Nuclear Assault - Out Of Order

Genre: Thrash
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1991

1. Sign In Blood
2. Fashion Junkie
3. Too Young To Die
4. Preaching To The Deaf
5. Resurrection
6. Stop Wait Think
7. Doctor Butcher
8. Quocustodiat
9. Hypocrisy
10. Save The Planet
11. Ballroom Blitz (Sweet cover)

4th album by Nuclear Assault and last one with their original lineup. It saw the band experiment with slower tempos and songwriting styles, which they hadn’t tried before for their last album together, which had mixed results and a mixed critical reaction at the time. The album doesn’t contain any comedy moments and doesn’t contain any brief extreme hardcore punk tracks, both of which had been at least part of the band’s appeal.

Pestilence - Testimony Of The Ancients

Genre: Death
Country: Holland
Year: 1991

1. The Secrecies Of Horror
2. Bitterness
3. Twisted Truth
4. Darkening
5. Lost Souls 6. Blood
7. Land Of Tears
8. Free Us From Temptation
9. Prophetic Revelations
10. Impure 11. Testimony
12. Soulless
13. Presence Of The Dead
14. Mindwarp
15. Stigmatized
16. In Sorrow

3rd album by Pestilence. Martin Van Drunen is departed, replaced on vocals by lead guitarist Patrick Mameli and the legendary Tony Choy (Cynic, Atheist) on bass. There are 16 tracks of which half are interludes of various kinds used to break up the main songs. The playing on here is not overly technical but tasteful and executed to perfection. Some riffs may be just pure aggression, but some other parts are truly emotional, very melodic and harmonic.

Bolt Thrower - War Master

Genre: Death
Country: England
Year: 1991

1. Intro... Unleashed (Upon Mankind)
2. What Dwells Within
3. The Shreds Of Sanity
4. Profane Creation
5. Destructive Infinity
6. Final Revelation
7. Cenotaph
8. Warmaster
9. Rebirth Of Humanity
10. Afterlife

3rd album by Bolt Thrower, that puts them in the pure death metal fields. The music is quite fast and the riffs are crushing, heavy and tightly-played, while retaining atmosphere. Karl Willetts' vocals are just as destructive, than on the first two records. One of the more surprising improvements on this album was the solos.

Meshuggah - Contradictions Collapse

Genre: Techn.Thrash
Country: Sweden
Year: 1991

1. Paralyzing Ignorance
2. Erroneous Manipulation
3. Abnegating Cecity
4. Internal Evidence
5. Qualms Of Reality
6. We'll Never See The Day
7. Greed
8. Choirs Of Devastation

Debut album by Meshuggah. It is certainly heavily influenced by old Metallica, but still shows the unconventional time signatures, that the band would become known for on subsequent releases. The music is spastic, grinding and stomping, as compared to later works which are more robotic and groovy in comparison. The tecnical level is very high, the production is good, but not outstanding.

Running Wild - Blazon Stone

Genre: Heavy/Power
Country: Germany
Year: 1991

1. Blazon Stone
2. Lonewolf
3. Slavery
4. Fire & Ice
5. Little Big Horn
6. Over The Rainbow
7. White Masque
8. Rolling Wheels
9. Bloody Red Rose
10. Straight To Hell
11. Heads Or Tails

6th album by Running Wild. This time, Rock 'n' Rolf decided to speed things up without sacrificing the melody of the two previous albums. The classic heavy metal vibe is still very much there, but packed in there we have tons of speed metal riffs and leads and there are also some definite power metal influences found on here.
