Korpiklaani - Manala

Genre: Folk/Heavy
Country: Finland
Year: 2012

1. Kunnia
2. Tuonelan Tuvilla
3. Rauta
4. Ruuminmultaa
5. Petoeläimen Kuola

8. Husky-Sledge
9. Dolorous
10. Uni
11. Metsälle
12. Sumussa Hämärän Aamun

8th album by Korpiklaani. Lyrically, the album deals with the underworld (Manala) and as a result, the sound of the album is a bit darker than on their previous records. The first half of the record is what we would expect from the band, thrashy, riff-filled, accordion-laced, polka tunes guaranteed. The second half changes the mood significantly and the songs that follow are a bit darker and gloomier than previous material from the band.

Meister's voice has a character and drives the material’s ability to emotionally connect with the listener. The riff work is quite traditional and without much flash.

Mercyful Fate - Time

Genre: Heavy
Country: Denmark
Year: 1994

1. Nightmare Be Thy Name

5. My Demon
6. Time
7. The Preacher

4th album by Mercyful Fate. The songs are very memorable and almost have a groovy twist in them thanks to the killer rhythm section. Musically, we got a lot more experimentation here than usual, but it works out great. This album is a little less ferocious than previous releases and maybe even a little more commercial-sounding at times.

3rd album by Bolt Thrower, that puts them in the pure death metal fields. The music is quite fast and the riffs are crushing, heavy and tightly-played, while retaining atmosphere. Karl Willetts' vocals are just as destructive, than on the first two records. One of the more surprising improvements on this album was the solos.

2nd album by F.U.B.A.R., 7 years after their debut and some split 'eps. Short, crisp, concise, 22 tracks in less than half an hour of grinding hardcore, with a lot of tempo changes and slam parts. Growls, screams, rare clean parts alternate in the frenzied pace and this time the band managed to get a proper sound that fits them well

10th album by Testament, 4 years after their last one, with Gene Hoglan behind the kit, replacing Paul Bostaph. The result is a much more melodic affair than 'The Formation of Damnation'. It is their attempt to go one step closer to their older sound by bringing in even more melody. The production was helmed by Andy Sneap and the result is a big, powerful and loud sound.

Wardog - Scorched Earth

Genre: Speed/Heavy
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1996

1. Scorched Earth
2. Sounds Of War
3. Broken But Not Dead
4. Seeing Is Believing

6. Killing Speed
7. Bucket 'O' Beer
8. Cuz
9. Tomb Of The Slain
10. Beast Of Damnation
11. Damned

2nd album by Wardog. Tom Gatis and Chris Catero are delivering some very guitar-oriented songs, greatly inspired by the '80s, but with modern sound. The guitar really stands out with excellent highly technical pounding riffs and solos throughout the album. Great vocal delivery by Gatis and the drumming is very potent and very effective as well, a relentless, fast, rhythmic pounding that keeps you locked into the album.

Liege Lord - Burn To My Touch

Genre: Power/Speed
Country: U.S.A.
Year: 1987

1. Transgressor
2. Birds Of Prey
3. Cast Out
4. Portrait Of Despair
5. Black Lit Knights
6. The Manic's Mask
7. Legend
8. Walking Fire
9. Speed Of Sound

2nd album by Liege Lord. While this effort lacks some of it’s predecessor’s charm, it does certainly continue their mark of quality. The style is not a huge departure from 'Freedom's Rise', but there is a darker element here and slight changes like the replacement of guitarist Pete McCarthy with Paul Nelson and vocalist Andy Michaud's performance that simply improved.

Strapping Young Lad - City

Genre: Thrash/Death/Industrial
Country: Canada
Year: 1997

1. Velvet Kevorkian

3. Oh My Fucking God
4. Detox
5. Home Nucleonics
6. AAA
7. Underneath The Waves
8. Room 429 (Cop Shoot Cop cover)
9. Spirituality

2nd album by Strapping Young Lad. Frontman Devin Townsend assembled a permanent lineup to record this album, including legendary Gene Hoglan, along with Townsend’s former bandmates Jed Simon on guitar and Byron Stroud on bass. The technical proficiency of each band member is amazing, to say the least. The riffs are killer and barely ever slow down enough.
